About Us

The Student Disability Services (SDS) at the University of Iowa strives to ensure a fair learning environment where students are able to succeed based on their own efforts and initiative. Our staff aspires the UI be a learning facility where students are unhampered in their academic pursuits by disadvantages associated with their particular disability.

Our staff members work with students, faculty, and other university resources to coordinate accommodations for entitled students under federal legislation. In doing so we affirm the worth of each individual and the spirit of diversity inherent in an inclusive university.

In our professional interactions we strive to provide clear, timely information in order to be supportive of our students as they pursue their education. We encourage self-advocacy for students and will assist faculty in meeting the needs of all UI students.

SDS Vision Statement

The mission of Student Disability Services is to assure access through reasonable accommodations to qualified students who currently demonstrate a condition producing significant functional limitations in one or more major life activities.

This equal access to education is achieved when barriers to learning are removed and students with disabilities are allowed to compete solely on the basis of their academic skills and abilities.

SDS collaborates with and empowers students to identify and understand their strengths. By acknowledging their strengths, students can begin cultivating opportunities for self-advocacy and independence that allow them to benefit from their college experience and be successful.

Support for students who have disabilities, as well as disability-related education of the larger community, allows SDS to facilitate the elimination of barriers these students face.

In providing academic accommodations to qualified students with disabilities, SDS seeks to promote equal opportunity within the context of the diverse UI community through practices that reflect university values.
